Steps for Maintaining Optimal Foot Health
Daily Hygiene Practices
Maintaining clean and dry feet is the foundation of preventative care. Wash your feet daily with lukewarm water and ensure you dry thoroughly between the toes to prevent fungal growth. Wear socks in your shoes and apply surgical spirit between your toes if you have macerated skin.
Proper Footwear Choices
Your shoes should provide adequate support and cushioning. Avoid shoes that are too tight or lack arch support, as they can lead to long-term structural issues and chronic discomfort. Always measure your feet regularly. A shoe with a fastening device such as an adjustable strap or a lace is recommended.
Skin & Nail Care
Apply a specialised foot cream daily to keep the skin hydrated and prevent cracks: for example 10% urea based cream for maintenance, and 25% heel balm for cracked skin. Trim nails straight across and check for any discoloration or changes in skin texture that may require professional assessment.
Physical Activity
Low-impact exercises like walking or swimming help maintain circulation and flexibility. Incorporate specific foot and ankle stretches into your routine to boost lower limb resilience.
